Urban Design and Urbanism

The subject of Urban Design and Urbanism is concerned with teaching and research about city planning and the shaping of the public realm, with a focus on sustainable development.

Members of staff from the Master's programme for Sustainable Urban Design are among those who teach on the subject.

Research in the subject is primarily concerned with studies of urban spaces and their potential. Additionally, questions of social segregation, blue-green solutions in open urban spaces, support for sustainable daily activities, and how spatial design and materiality affect human interactions are also studied.

Ida Sandström, architect and researcher at Lund University, Department of Architecture and Built Environment, focuses on collective housing, existential sustainability and the design and use of shared urban spaces. The research is practice-oriented, in close collaboration with municipalities and other actors with an interest in sustainable development. Collaboration is conducted within the Urban Arena network and the Share Future Living platform, which aims to promote exchange between academia, industry, organisations and the public sector with a focus on housing sharing and social sustainability.
