Frostavallen Artist Residency

This project is an attempt to highlight and activate an area which many times gets forgotten and hidden in between. Mittskåne is an area with an interesting character and a unique cultural heritage. By introducing this project I hope to contribute to the activation of the rural areas of Mittskåne which, like so many other rural areas, are struggling in terms of depopulation and a lack of services etc.

There is a growing list of recent investigations which demonstrates how art and culture can act as driving forces in stimulating rural areas. This project will take off from these ideas and hopefully increase the interest for Mittskåne and similar projects in the area. Ideally this could develop into more initiatives which further strengthen the rural areas in terms of community, pride and identity.

SPACE WARS - Analysing transgression as a tool for critique, exploration and ultimately design.

Tutor: Laleh Foroughanfar

Examiner: Per-Johan Dahl

This term Space Wars was coined by sociologist and philosopher Zygmunt Bauman to describe the way in which space has been fabricated has turned into a power play. The fabricators are those who are in positions of power and want to homogenise cities to fit a specific narrative. This does not leave much room for space to be interpreted, used, and developed in any different way. However, this war has a resistance army: transgressors.

A simplified way to describe transgression can be to say it is to intentionally break a law or rule. However, the breaking of these rules has more to do with breaching norms, traditions, or conventions. Transgression has it core principle exceeding of due bounds or limits. There are people sometimes without even knowing it, who push the boundaries of space. In doing so they use the act of transgression to construct and deconstruct space to fit their own, or a groups, notions how an urban setting should be used. Anyone who has ever protested or completed an ollie over a set of steps has been part of the resistance army.

The term transgression thus becomes a valuable source in which to investigate architecture and challenge its accepted practices and norms. What we see in the case study of Christiania, is how they have used, and most importantly, misused space to construct their own narrative. Throughout its history, Christiania has been “fighting against normalisation and for their version of the right to the city”. As I will show in my thesis, architectural and spatial transgression has been at the heart of their own space war.

Using this concept, this project will open pandoras box and give a small insight into how transgression can be used in the context of architecture.

The renovation of residential housing developments from Danish modernism

Examiner: Christer Malmström

Tutor: Thomas Hellquist

Examination: September 2020

Language: English

The thesis deals with the renovation of residential housing developments from Danish modernism and consists of three parts.

Part 1 gives a brief theoretical background by pointing out the original concepts and intentions of Danish modernism and its modernistic housing projects. It also gives an overview of the most typical tasks and challenges that are encountered today when the buildings - 60 to 90 years after their construction – are in need of major renovations. Finally, the theoretical part also discusses the difficult question of heritage assessment and heritage conservation in the context of modernistic housing developments.

Part 2 examines recent renovation projects of residential housing developments in Denmark and tries to evaluate their prevalent conservation strategies. The investigations utilize an evaluation approach similar to Gudmand-Høyer [GuHø18] and applies it to the renovations of Lundevænget and Tingbjerg, two housing developments that were recently renovated under the consultancy of Rambøll.

Part 3 consists of a design project by the student. The project focuses on two possible addition for the housing development of Bispeparken, built between 1939 and 1941. The proposed solution deals with various problems that are considered characteristic for the developments of that time. The chosen additions introduce new functionalities by offering differently sized apartments with shared spaces, common outside terraces and elevator access. While the new building volumes help to define a protected, semi-private space for the residents, a workshop and community kitchen increase the interaction with the outside neighbourhood. The chosen materiality and form tries to combine well with the existing fabric.

LOKALISERA -  alternativa framtider sprungna ur lokala förutsättningar

Title: wood among bricks

Author: Sanna Molinder

Examiner: Christer Malmström

Supervisors: Alex van de Beld, Elin Daun

Today’s quick and cheap solutions for housing results in many buildings with a short lifespan. This focus leads to unnecessary material usage and additives to the carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. In a time of global warming, we need to urgently adapt our knowledge and seek for building techniques and materials that respond to the surrounding context and view upon the architectural process as a holistic cycle. Wood as a “sustainable” material has undoubtedly gained great attention in architecture and engineering over the past twenty years. In Sweden, there are incentives to work with wood in our buildings. It is a local material that we farm in our forest. However, even with today’s increased usage of wood and its recent digitalization, this does still not seem to greatly impact the material choices of the building industry in the country, especially not in the south. Throughout the thesis I am striving to understand wood as a building material. The theoretical section of the essay consists of six parts, where wood is presented from a contextual point of view as well as its benefits, considerations (read criticalities), and fire protection. This regards wood as a building material in its more “raw form” such as timber and planks, but also laminated wood such as Glue-laminated timber (GLT) and Cross-laminated timber (CLT). The research constitutes a ground for an architectural exploratory experiment, where a wood structure will be implemented in a contradictory environment of brick and concrete. Contextual analysis and site investigation will be followed by a proposed program, explanation of its priorities, ending with an architectural evaluation of the experiment implementation. With this thesis I am searching to find out if wood would be a sustainable alternative material choice to brick in the context of southern Sweden.
